IBS Center for Multidimensional Carbon Materials

Research Fellow Position / Theory Group

27 Nov 2016 / CMCM
Deadline / Closing

Research Fellow Positions Available at Institute for Basic Science,
Center for Multi-Dimensional Carbon Materials (IBS CMCM)

The IBS CMCM located in Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) of Korea is launching a theory research group led by Prof. Feng Ding (see http://www.researcherid.com/rid/D-5938-2011 for more information). The theory group has 5-6 Research Fellow opening (for both fresh PhDs and senior researchers) in the following research topics:

I. Multi-scale computational methods development for materials science, including global structure searching and/or transition state searching, classical and semi-empirical potential energy surfaces, kinetic Monte Carlo algorithms, coarse grained algorithms, Phase Field Theory, etc.

II. Application of machine learning in materials science, including the development of artificial neural network (ANN) potentials and material prediction by machine leaning, etc.

III. The growth mechanism of low dimensional materials at atomic level and multi-scales, including (i)the formation mechanism of fullerenes from vapor phases; (ii) the mechanisms of carbon nanotube (CNT) growth and the potential routes towards chirality selection during CNTs synthesis; (iii) the mechanism of chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth of graphene and other 2D materials; (iv) the mechanism of diamond CVD growth, (iv) the mechanism of nanowire’s CVD and self-catalyzed CVD growth, etc

IV. The structural defects, mechanical, thermal, electronic properties of CNTs, graphene and 2D materials

V. The multi-scale modeling of fibers and assembly of fibers

VI. The computational study of surface science and chemical reactions in solution.

Applicants for research fellow positions are required to have a broad knowledge in one or few of the following dispenaries: physics, chemistry, materials science, mechanical engineering. Experiences of computational algorithms development and coding experiences will be advantageous. And we are especially interested in those are experienced in the development of the artificial neural network (ANN) potential and the materials genome applications via machine learning.

All the positions are available immediately. The salary and benefits to the IBS-research fellows are highly competitive, depending on the research experience of the applicant. Interested candidates should send to f.ding@unist.ac.kr an updated CV, a list of 3-5 representative publications in additional to the list of all publications and a research statement addressing:

1. the motivation of study,
2. the interested research topics,
3. your experience and preparation for the research topics, including experiences of:
- using Linux operating system;
-coding with Fortran, C or other language;
-using commercialized computational software, such as VASP, Gaussian, etc.;
-algorithm development, such as strategy of global minimum searching, classical potential, tight binding, MD, MC, KMC, phase field theory and coarse grain algorithm;
-and additional information that related to the application.

*All docments should be written in English.
